This site exists to provide easy access to information and online links about Poetry New Zealand (now Poetry Aotearoa), an international journal of poetry and poetics.

If you wish to purchase upcoming issues, our publisher Massey University Press should be your first port of call. For general news and views, you can visit our facebook page here.

This, by contrast, is intended as an archive of the magazine and its contents over the past two thirds of a century, from the 1950s to the present day [NB: the Author index below runs from 1951 to 2020, but subsequent issues have not been indexed in full].

History

Poetry New Zealand, also known as PNZ, Poetry NZ, and (now) Poetry New Zealand Yearbook began in 1951 with the publication of Louis Johnson's New Zealand Poetry Yearbook. It is therefore this country's oldest poetry magazine, but it still maintains a focus on new and younger writers. It also contains reviews and articles about poetry in New Zealand and elsewhere.

Since Johnson ceased his editorship in the 1960s, Poetry New Zealand has been edited by some of New Zealand's most distinguished poets and academics, including Frank McKay (James K. Baxter's biographer), Elizabeth Caffin (formerly Managing Editor of Auckland University Press), David Drummond, Grant Duncan, Riemke Ensing, Bernard Gadd, Leonard Lambert, Harry Ricketts, Elizabeth Smither and Brian Turner. The magazine was edited from 1993 to 2014 by Alistair Paterson – a well-known New Zealand poet, novelist, anthologist, editor and literary critic – with help from guest editors such as Owen Bullock, Siobhan Harvey and Nicholas Reid. The present managing editor is Jack Ross, of Massey University's School of English and Media Studies.

The magazine's policy is to support poetry and poets both in New Zealand and overseas. Each annual issue features a substantial selection of poems and an interview with a developing or established poet. The rest of the issue is comprised of a selection of poetry from New Zealand and abroad, as well as essays, reviews and general criticism.

While New Zealand poets receive the most attention, Poetry New Zealand is always looking for high quality work from other countries. Overseas poets printed here have included: Charles Bernstein, Charles Bukowski, Wanda Coleman, Robert Creeley, Les Murray, August Kleinzahler and many others.
